Selective Removal: The Razor's Edge
The removal step has one purpose: take the penetrant off the surface while leaving it in the flaws. Both failure directions destroy the test.
- Underwashing leaves residual surface penetrant. Under UV-A it appears as background glow; with visible dye, as a red haze or smear. Indications must compete with that noise, and fine ones lose. - Overwashing keeps removing after the surface is clean - water, solvent, or emulsifier reaches into the flaws and strips the penetrant that capillary action spent the whole dwell placing. The part then looks perfect and inspects clean, which is precisely what makes overwashing the classic PT sin.
The removal technique is matched to the penetrant Method: A (water-washable), B (post-emulsifiable, lipophilic), C (solvent-removable), and D (post-emulsifiable, hydrophilic). Each has its own controls and its own way of going wrong, and your written procedure defines the parameters for all of them.
Overwash, Underwash, and Recovery
Learn to read the wash result the way an inspector will:
- Overwashed: the surface looks flawless - dark and clean under UV-A, spotless with visible dye. Indications are faint, broken, or missing entirely, and a stripped flaw is indistinguishable from a sound part. Causes: washing past background, excessive pressure or temperature, needle-jet spray, flooded solvent, or emulsifier contact run long. Recovery is total: clean the part, dry it, and reprocess from penetrant application - re-applying penetrant briefly over a stripped surface is not a qualified shortcut. - Underwashed: background glow or dye haze remains - speckled, smeared, or pooled in surface roughness. Real indications can hide inside it, and developer applied over heavy residue produces a noisy, uninterpretable result. Your procedure may permit a brief, controlled supplemental wash; beyond that, reprocess.
Because an overwashed part looks *good*, process discipline - pressure, temperature, time, technique, and lighting at the wash station - is the only real defense. The daily system performance check on a known-defect panel is what catches a wash that has quietly drifted destructive.
