The MT Process from Start to Finish

Here is the whole method in one pass - the skeleton every later lesson hangs detail on:

1. Know the job. The governing procedure defines the part, technique, equipment, coverage, and acceptance criteria. 2. Prepare the surface. Remove grease, oil, loose scale and rust, and coatings that would hold particles off the surface or mask indications. 3. Verify the system. Equipment performance checks, particle or bath condition, and lighting - adequate white light for visible particles; ultraviolet intensity and a darkened area for fluorescent ones. 4. Magnetize - first direction. Establish a magnetic field of suitable strength and known direction in the part. 5. Apply particles. In the standard *continuous method*, particles are applied while magnetizing current flows, and indications form over leakage fields. 6. Interpret and evaluate. Decide which indications are relevant, then evaluate relevant ones against the acceptance criteria. 7. Magnetize - second direction. Repeat application and interpretation with flux roughly perpendicular to the first shot, because a discontinuity lying parallel to the flux may not show at all. 8. Close out. Record results, demagnetize when required, and post-clean the part.
