NDT training vs certification: what a course provides

A course completion certificate records education. Personnel certification confirms that a person has met a defined certification program. Knowing who issues each record helps you choose suitable training and describe your credentials accurately.

Separate four parts of your pathway

When comparing an NDT course, ask exactly which part of your pathway it supplies. A product named after a method, level or examination does not automatically include every requirement associated with that credential.

Education, preparation, certification and permission to work
PartPurposeWhat to verify
Formal trainingOrganized instruction in the method, with documented learning and assessments.Syllabus, level, hours, results and acceptance of the training provider.
Exam preparationStudy and practice focused on the topics and format of a named examination. The current exam scope and whether the course also supplies any required formal training.
Personnel certificationRecognition under an employer or certification-body program that its requirements are met.Issuer, method, level, scope, validity and outstanding requirements.
Authorization to workPermission from the responsible organization to perform the specified work.Employer, customer, site, technique and local requirements for the actual assignment.

Employer certification and SNT-TC-1A

In an SNT-TC-1A-based program, the employer defines and administers its written practice and is responsible for personnel certification. The course provider supplies training evidence for that process. A school certificate is not an ASNT-issued personnel credential.

Ask your employer which records it needs before enrolling. Typical review areas include your formal training, relevant experience, examinations and vision requirements. The written practice and applicable contract requirements determine the details.

ASNT certification and ISO 9712 programs

ASNT administers certification programs separately from an employer's internal program. Its ASNT NDT Level II route includes ASNT general and specific examinations; the employer remains responsible for applicable practical, vision and job-specific requirements. Read that program's current application rules instead of assuming a course purchase includes an ASNT examination.

ISO 9712 defines a framework for third-party NDT personnel certification. ASNT 9712 is one certification program based on that framework. It is a different route from merely completing training mapped to an employer-based recommended practice.

For work across countries, ask the intended employer or certification body about the exact issuer, method, level, industrial or product sector, and accepted training. Recognition depends on the relevant program and work requirements. NDT Academy does not promise that its courses confer ISO 9712 certification or will be accepted by every employer, customer or country.

What NDT Academy completion records show

NDT Academy provides online courses with published syllabi and course completion records. Review the selected course's method, level and formal training hours. The employer-review page includes example certificates and transcripts so you can see the documentation before enrolling.

A training certificate and transcript help document the course you completed. They do not establish your entire employment history, demonstrate every workplace skill or authorize you to sign inspection reports. A certificate-verification result confirms the recorded training credential; it does not expand its scope into personnel certification.

Keep original records and use their exact wording when describing your education. For example, say you completed formal training in the named method and level. Use a personnel-certification title only when the appropriate issuer has awarded it and it remains valid for that scope.

Exam preparation and safety courses have separate outcomes

The catalog also includes API inspector and CWI examination preparation, NDT Basic preparation, and radiation-safety training. Read each course's purpose carefully. Preparing for an examination does not grant the named professional credential, satisfy every eligibility requirement or guarantee a passing result.

Before scheduling an external examination, confirm eligibility, required experience, applicable references and registration directly with the issuing organization. For radiography work, confirm the separate safety and authorization requirements with your employer or radiation-safety contact.

The practical next step is to write a short gap list: training to complete, experience to document, examinations to take, records to submit and the person responsible for each decision. Review that list before choosing a course.
