Practice CWI API 1104 code navigation with better lookup notes

Finding a page quickly is useful only if you can explain why it answers the question. For CWI API 1104 preparation, practice leaving a trail that another learner could follow: the assigned reference, the topic you searched, the provision you found and any context still missing.

Confirm the reference before the lookup

AWS describes Part C as testing understanding and application of a code, standard or specification. Its Part C information guide also says references are specific to the examination selected. Treat finding a heading as the start of a study answer, not its conclusion.

The AWS examination reference guide checked for this article lists API 1104, 22nd edition, for the pipeline examination. Before selecting a study copy, follow the current reference links from the AWS CWI program page and confirm the requirements for your examination.

Publication changes and examination references need separate checks. API’s Standards Plan records API 1104-A1, edition 22, with a publication date of September 3, 2026. That entry establishes a publication record; it does not establish when AWS includes that addendum in a particular examination.

If an edition or addendum in your study packet is unclear, resolve that reference question before practicing from it. Use the exercise below for personal study; check AWS’s current examination rules separately for permitted books, notes and reference formats.

Record a route that you can retrace

NDT Academy’s API 1104 navigation lesson introduces the document map, references and defined terms. Its later lookup-practice lesson adds citation recording, table context and review of weak topics. Combine those habits in a short study note rather than saving only a page number.

Begin with the question’s subject. Locate the relevant topic in the assigned book, read the surrounding context, and follow any definition or cross-reference needed to understand it. Record the final provision after that reading. A heading can point you toward an answer without supplying the whole answer.

  • Reference: the document title, edition and applicable revision information supplied for the exercise.
  • Question cue: what the exercise actually asks you to locate or explain.
  • Route: the topic heading, definition or cross-reference you followed.
  • Citation: the paragraph, table or figure identifier that supports your explanation.
  • Context: relevant headings, notes or conditions that you checked.
  • Open question: missing information you still need from the lesson or instructor.

Repair three incomplete lookup notes

These fictional notes are study examples, not AWS examination questions. For each one, identify what prevents another learner from retracing the lookup. Then compare your answer with the suggested repair. No welding acceptance decision is needed.

Make the note useful before relying on its answer
Incomplete study noteWhat to recoverWhat the improved note should explain
Note A: “The answer is on page 42.”The assigned document, edition and actual provision identifier.Which reference was used and where its supporting provision can be found. Page 42 is an invented example, not an API citation.
Note B: “I found the right heading; the term probably means what it does at work.”The applicable definition and any reference needed to read the provision.Whether the exercise uses a defined term and how that affects the reading, without substituting a familiar shop meaning.
Note C: “The table gives the answer; I skipped the notes.”The relevant row and column context, table notes and any linked provision.Which context was checked and what information is still needed before the table can support an answer.

Turn a weak note into the next practice task

After the exercise, label the gap in your note. An unidentified reference calls for checking the study packet. A lost topic calls for another pass through the document map. An unresolved term calls for a definition lookup. Missing table context calls for slower reading around the relevant entry.

On a second attempt, use the improved note to reopen the supporting provision and explain your route in your own words. If you cannot reproduce the route, keep the question open. Review the lesson or ask the instructor to clarify the missing context rather than inventing a citation.

This exercise practices retrieval and explanation. It does not supply production welding instructions, acceptance criteria or permission to use a particular document on a job.

Continue with CWI API 1104 preparation

The academy’s CWI API 1104 track brings together welding fundamentals, practical evaluation study and codebook preparation. Use the course outline to find navigation and lookup-practice lessons, then review the practice-exam options. Course completion is preparation; AWS determines eligibility, examination requirements and certification.
