Visual inspection lighting and access: a learner’s guide

Visual testing depends on having a useful view of the surface being examined. Lighting, surface reflections and access all affect that view. A VT learner should be able to explain what is visible, what remains hidden and what information is needed before evaluating a finding. Start with those questions when studying an image or discussing a training example.

Start with the area you need to see

ASNT’s visual testing overview identifies viewing access and lighting as limitations, and explains how smooth and rough surfaces reflect light differently. This makes the relationship between the surface, illumination and observer a useful starting point for study.

Imagine an instructor gives you a picture of a training bracket with a curved edge. You can see its front face, but part of the edge disappears behind a lip. Before describing the bracket’s condition, identify which surface the exercise asks you to assess. Then mark the visible region and the region the picture does not show.

That simple annotation gives your instructor something specific to discuss. A confident description of the front face does not answer a question about the hidden edge.

Look for useful detail, not just brightness

Boeing’s Maintenance Event Decision Aid guide, hosted by FAA, identifies both insufficient lighting for visual inspection and excessive light producing glare or reflections as maintenance-environment factors. This is a human-factors reference, not a universal NDT lighting specification.

In the bracket exercise, imagine a second photograph with a bright reflection across the area of interest. The image may look brighter overall while leaving you uncertain about that particular feature. Write down what you can distinguish in each photograph and where your confidence changes.

Ask the instructor what additional comparison would help explain the difference. Avoid treating the most visually striking image as the most informative one. The purpose is to examine your reasoning, without choosing an inspection setting from a photograph.

Understand what an optical aid adds

ASNT describes mirrors and magnifiers as visual aids and borescopes or video probes as ways to view difficult-to-access areas. An aid changes how the surface is viewed; understanding that view remains part of the task.

Suppose the instructor adds a close-up of the bracket’s curved edge. Ask where it belongs on the whole object and whether it answers the original question. A close-up can be helpful while still leaving orientation or coverage unclear.

In your study notes, connect the detailed image to its location on the training object. Keep unanswered questions visible instead of assuming that a new image completes the exercise.

Practice observation before conclusion

Use this classroom worksheet to separate what an image shows from what you infer. It supports discussion of the hypothetical bracket exercise; your instructor can use the notes to explore the limits of each observation.

  1. Describe the observation in plain language without naming a defect you have not established.
  2. Separate uncertainty about the view from uncertainty about the feature itself.
  3. Ask the instructor to challenge one assumption in your notes.
  4. Revise your explanation when new information changes what the example supports.

Connect the exercise to your training

ASNT’s published VT General examination outline includes lighting, contrast and resolution, optics, equipment, and evaluation and reporting. These topics give a useful structure for your study.

Use the exercise to identify a question you cannot yet explain. Perhaps you recognize glare but cannot describe its effect on the feature, or you understand a magnified view but lose track of its location. Bring that specific gap to a lesson or instructor discussion.

For actual inspection work, use the applicable procedure and authorized technical direction for job-specific examination conditions and evaluation criteria.
