Plan your CWI nine-year application before choosing training

A useful recertification plan connects the course you intend to take with the application you need to finish. Start with the decisions and dates, then work backward to the documents and study tasks. That makes a training choice part of a complete plan.

Identify the application route first

AWS separates three- and six-year renewal from nine-year recertification. Its current CWI program page lists several recertification options, including practical examination, continuing education, CRI certification and an endorsement. Check the conditions of the option you intend to use rather than assuming every route has the same paperwork.

Use the current resources linked from the AWS CWI program page and the application portal it identifies. International candidates should confirm their application arrangements with the appropriate AWS agent. Write down the route you are checking and the unresolved question before booking training or an examination.

Separate credential expiry from other deadlines

AWS QC1:2016-AMD1, Section 16.1, requires an approved nine-year recertification application to reach AWS by the current certification's expiration date, no earlier than 11 months before it. The section allows a 60-day administrative extension, during which certification is considered expired. Treat expiry as the planning boundary, not the start of spare active-certification time.

A selected examination or course can introduce another scheduling deadline. The AWS nine-year application includes fields for an examination date and submission deadline. Check the current instructions for your chosen option and location; do not replace that deadline with your credential's expiry date.

Make one planning sheet for the whole application

The linked AWS application checklist covers identity, qualifying work experience, visual acuity, photograph, payment and signed terms, with route-specific sections. Follow the current instructions for your own application. This personal worksheet helps organize the work; it is not an AWS application or a determination that you qualify.

Test the plan with a missing dependency

Consider a fictional learner who has set aside the final week of the month for an application. Their study schedule is written down, but a document request is still unanswered and an appointment has not been arranged. The plan looks complete only because it records the learner's own tasks and leaves out other people's response time.

Repair that plan by marking the unanswered request and the unscheduled appointment as separate open items. Give each a next action, a person to contact and a personal follow-up date. Then check whether the confirmed deadlines leave room to obtain the documents, review them and correct a problem.

Do not invent a processing time to make the dates fit. Ask AWS about an unclear application deadline or status, and ask the provider about course completion and record availability. A personal target is useful only when the dependencies behind it are visible.

  • Can you identify the source of every official date in your plan?
  • Which tasks can you finish yourself, and which are waiting on a response?
  • What would you do next if a document arrived incomplete?

Connect your training choice to the plan

NDT Academy's CWI nine-year course is intended for existing CWIs considering recertification through training. It refreshes fundamentals, practical inspection and code application, then closes with a capstone assessment and a documented PDH package for submission. Review the syllabus and documentation guidance alongside the application route you have chosen.

Use practice questions to identify subjects to revisit, and leave time for the course requirements and your application work. Course completion does not itself renew your AWS credential; AWS reviews the complete recertification application.
