Weld discontinuity vs defect: a CWI API 1104 study guide
Finding an unusual feature in a weld starts an inspection question. Calling it a defect answers a different question: does it fail the applicable acceptance requirements? For CWI API 1104 study, learn to keep the observation, its interpretation and the acceptance decision connected without treating them as the same step.

What makes a weld discontinuity a defect?
A discontinuity is an interruption in the material's usual structure or uniformity. A defect is a discontinuity that makes the weld unacceptable under the applicable requirements. The word defect therefore carries an acceptance judgment; discontinuity alone does not.
The distinction also means that an unfamiliar feature is not automatically acceptable. Its identity and the relevant requirements still need to be established. In your study notes, separate what the evidence shows from the conclusion the criteria support.

Separate observation, interpretation and evaluation
Use three columns when reviewing a classroom specimen or supplied examination record. This format makes it easier to see whether a conclusion has enough supporting information.

Establish which requirements answer the question
AWS describes CWI Part C as a test of understanding and applying a code, standard or specification. The reference is specific to the examination selected. An API 1104 study question needs its stated reference and context; a rule remembered from a different exercise may answer a different question.
Before comparing a finding with a criterion, identify the following information in the assignment. If something is missing, mark the gap so it can be resolved.
- The governing document, edition and applicable revisions specified for the exercise.
- The weld type, examination method and condition the question asks you to evaluate.
- The exact clause or table that applies, including any relevant notes or exceptions.
- The measurements, units and other evidence that the criterion requires.

Try an evidence-first classroom exercise
Imagine an instructor supplies a fictional photograph labeled Training Coupon P-7. A group of rounded surface openings is visible near marker B on the weld face. The image has no scale, and the assignment does not identify an acceptance document. A learner writes: small holes, bad weld.
Rewrite that note using only established information: Training Coupon P-7, weld face near marker B: a group of rounded surface openings is visible. Size and distribution have not been established from the supplied image.
Surface porosity may be an interpretation to investigate. Keep that interpretation separate from the description until the supplied evidence supports it. The photograph also leaves the acceptance question unresolved: a label such as small does not provide the dimensions or applicable criterion.
Ask the instructor for the specimen or suitable measurement evidence, the governing reference and the context needed to select its criterion. Once those are supplied, add the comparison and cite the rule in your answer. This exercise practices the reasoning and record; it does not assign a production weld an acceptance decision.
- Underline the observations supported by the assignment.
- Circle any interpretation that still needs evidence.
- List what the selected criterion requires before completing the evaluation.
