Before using a calculator for an API 510 practice question, make the supplied information readable. Identify the requested result, label each value and record which references belong to your exam preparation.
Match your references to your exam window
API’s API 510 program page links a Body of Knowledge and a Publications Effectivity Sheet. The documents linked for September 2026 through May 2027 serve different study purposes: the Body of Knowledge identifies topics, while the effectivity sheet identifies applicable publications and editions.
Keep a short reference register at the front of your study notes. Record your intended exam window, the two document links and the date you checked them. Follow the current links from API when your plans change, rather than relying on an old downloaded copy.

Write down what the practice question asks
The current API 510 Body of Knowledge includes corrosion-rate and remaining-life calculations and expects candidates to understand and use US customary and SI units. Organize practice around the topic and unit system stated in the exercise.
Begin your working with three lines: the result requested, the information supplied and the information still missing. A thickness value without a clear label is a question to resolve with the exercise explanation or instructor before putting it into a calculation.

Imagine that the following items appear in a practice packet. For each one, write the question you would need answered before continuing. These invented excerpts are a study exercise; they contain no operating recommendation or equipment acceptance decision.

Turn a missed question into a focused review task
A useful error log explains what you need to revisit. Record the exercise identifier, the misunderstood label or missing evidence, the source to check and the question you want to answer next.
For example, replace “I got the remaining-life question wrong” with “I used an unlabelled time span; I need to identify its dated records and unit in the exercise explanation.” Once you resolve the question, add the corrected explanation in your own words and schedule another practice attempt.
Keep unresolved points visible. Completing arithmetic does not establish that you understood the supplied inputs, and a classroom answer does not authorize a pressure-vessel operating decision.
