Radiographic image quality: a film RT study guide

A radiograph is easier to study when you can connect the image to its supporting evidence. Film identity, image quality and the criteria used to evaluate a component each raise different questions. This guide helps RT learners organize those questions before moving into an interpretation exercise.

Separate image quality from component acceptance

ASTM’s public description of E94/E94M distinguishes producing satisfactory film radiographs from deciding whether a material or component is acceptable. The guide does not set component acceptance standards; those decisions depend on the applicable product requirements.

Build an image-quality study map

The IAEA’s training guidelines distinguish film identification, density, contrast, definition, image quality indicators and viewing as learning subjects. Use the map below to give each item its own question.

Understand the IQI evidence

An image quality indicator, or IQI, provides evidence about radiographic image quality under the stated technique. ASNT describes using IQIs with film radiography to establish the required image quality. That role is different from identifying every discontinuity or deciding whether a component meets its acceptance criteria.

Practice with a missing record

A fictional training packet contains film F-12, an examination record identifying F-12 and a written IQI result. The exercise mentions a density measurement, but the corresponding record is absent.

Write the question, “What density result belongs to F-12?” beside the missing entry. Keep the supplied IQI result under its own heading; it answers a different part of the exercise.

The practice is complete when you can explain what is present, what is unresolved and why one result cannot stand in for the other. That explanation is the learning outcome of this example.
