Survey meters and personal dosimetry: a radiation safety study guide
Learning instrument names is easier when each name has a question attached. This study guide helps you organize radiation safety terminology, compare the purpose of different records and prepare questions for your training.
Start with the quantity and context
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission glossary describes dose rate as radiation dose per unit of time. It describes a dosimeter as an instrument for measuring and recording accumulated personal dose. A rate and an accumulated result answer different questions.
For a classroom example, write the quantity and unit beside the result before explaining it. Keep the example’s description of the instrument and measurement conditions with your notes.

Compare monitoring roles
IAEA SSG-11 (2011) separates individual and workplace monitoring.
Electronic personal dosimeters can combine dose readings, dose-rate indications and alarms. The functions of a particular device matter. The IAEA distinguishes these personal devices from workplace survey meters; sharing a unit or alarm feature does not make their roles interchangeable.

Try a two-card study exercise
Imagine two fictional study cards with no numerical readings. Card A is headed “Workplace survey” and names a location and time, but leaves the quantity and unit blank. Card B is headed “Individual monitoring” and names a learner and monitoring interval, but leaves the device identifier blank.
Make two columns in your notebook: “Information supplied” and “Question to resolve.” Place each card’s existing labels in the first column and turn its blank fields into questions in the second.
Then exchange the headings in your notes. Explain why the remaining labels no longer fit the same question. The goal is to recognize missing context and explain the difference between the records. These invented cards establish no exposure result or work authorization.
