ASNT Level II MT and UT Exam Updates: 2026–2027 Dates

What the revised outlines make explicit

The revised MT outline details equipment checks, technique selection, interpretation, reporting and procedure use. The UT outline makes tasks such as scan planning, equipment setup, data quality, evaluation and reporting explicit. Our reading is that the more detailed task descriptions provide a better checklist for finding study gaps; they do not establish that every listed concept is newly tested.

Use your appointment date to select the outline

ASNT uses “prior to” and “after” in the date headings. If your appointment falls on the exact boundary date, confirm the applicable outline with ASNT.

Build a small study checklist before starting another round of practice questions:

1. Record your certification program, method, exam component and scheduled date at the top of the plan. This prevents a General exam outline from becoming your only checklist for a broader certification application.
2. Save a dated copy of the applicable outline or record its link and the date you checked it. Recheck after any scheduling change and before the final study period.
3. For each topic, identify a lesson, reference or supervised learning activity you can use. Leave a visible gap when you cannot find one; familiarity with a heading is not the same as being able to explain it.
4. Ask your instructor focused questions. “Where can I practice interpreting and documenting a result?” is more useful than “Does this course cover everything?”

Make the study exercise practical

Keep your notes practical. For a study exercise, describe the information you would need to select a technique, the checks you would perform and the evidence you would record. Ask for feedback on your reasoning. Treat that exercise as preparation, with workplace procedures and supervision governing actual inspections.

Keep exam topics separate from qualification requirements

The outline update does not by itself establish a new eligibility rule. ASNT's current program still requires documented training and experience, and assigns employers the applicable practical, visual-acuity and job-specific examinations under their written practice. Training certificates and work-experience evidence serve different purposes.

Keep those application records in a separate checklist so that a detailed study plan does not hide an unanswered qualification question. Ask ASNT about certification requirements and your employer about its responsibilities.
